Iris M. Bass, Esq.
President of Collaborative Family Lawyers of South Florida Inc.
Backround

Originally from New York, Ms. Bass graduated from Russell Sage College in Troy, New York with a degree in education and the social sciences. She taught in the Albany-Troy area and then on Long Island, New York, before moving to Florida. During her teaching career, she became acutely aware of the effects of divorce on the family.

In 1980, she entered the Nova Center for the Study of Law and, during the time she was enrolled, she became aware of the advantages of alternative means of resolving disputes when she interned at the Broward County Dispute Resolution Program. She was impressed with the potential of clients, resolving their own disputes under the guidance of a person trained in this field as opposed to the traditional judge-as-decision-maker approach.

Following graduation from law school, Iris was associated with Michael K. Davis for ten years as a civil attorney on a variety of matters including probate, contracts, wills, medical malpractice, divorce and post-divorce matters. As time went on, she became more involved with divorce cases and less so in the other fields. She became trained as a certified family mediator in 1993 which enabled her to assist individuals to resolve their disputes without litigation (or, alternatively, during the litigation period) as a neutral, representing neither party.

In 1993, she established her own practice which focuses on family matters, including all divorce and post divorce issues, other family conflicts, family mediation, and collaborative lawyering. She has also been certified as an arbitrator and is trained and participates in NASD cases as an arbitrator.

Iris is active in the legal community both as a mediator and litigation practitioner. She has been active in the Association of Broward County Mediators for many years, serving on their Board and in various officer capacities, most recently as president in the 2001-2002 year. She continues to be an active member of the Legislative Committee of the Family Law Section of the Florida Bar, is chairperson of the Alternative Dispute Resolution?s Collaborative Law Section of the Florida Bar, is Co-chair of the Broward County Bar Association's Alternative Dispute Resolution Committee and is currently President of the Collaborative Family Lawyers of South Florida.

Iris understands that the dissolution of a marriage is a tremendous anxiety-producing life event and treats the client accordingly.
